It's scheduled for Thursday, May 16th, starting at 4:15 pm, and you have the choice to attend either online or in person at the EC Fredricks Theatre. Keep an eye out for a calendar invitation for your convenience.

As we wrap up the academic year, we're excited to extend an invitation to the Lethbridge College Faculty Association (LCFA) Annual General Meeting (AGM). Engagement Strategies Toward Ending Workplace Sexual Harassment

Creating a campus culture that promotes safety, respect, equality and the well-being of everyone in our community is a shared responsibility. As faculty, you play an important role in creating a safe and healthy campus for our students. Lethbridge College is offering all employees the chance to take part in one of three upcoming training sessions through the Chinook Sexual Assault Centre and the Association of Alberta Sexual Assault Services.  

Engagement Strategies Toward Ending Workplace Sexual Harassment is a three-hour online workshop offered May 15, June 18 and July 11 and explores many important topics including defining what is and isn’t sexual harassment and what to do if you witness or hear about a sexual harassment incident. As the end of the semester is quickly approaching, we encourage faculty to sign up for the May session before leaving for the summer. Please use the links below to register for an upcoming workshop.

Faculty Vacation LOU - Transition Guidelines

Good Afternoon,

Following the March 12, 2024 communication regarding the rescission of the vacation Leave of Understanding (LOU) for faculty, please find the following guidance to help with the upcoming transition period:

  • Faculty intending to take time off between now and May 24, 2024, are encouraged to promptly engage in discussions with their Dean or Associate Dean (AD). Upon approval, faculty are requested to promptly submit a leave request in self-service.

  • The self-service leave request system will close at the end of the day May 10, 2024. Subsequently, a report will be generated and shared with each center, advising which faculty members have time to make up.

  • All vacation time taken during the academic year (August 28, 2023, to May 24, 2024) is to be made up by June 30, 2024. Faculty and administration are urged to work together to determine when this time will be made up.

  • Faculty unable to make time up by June 30, 2024, are advised to discuss options with their Dean or AD to determine alternative plans. These situations will be treated as exceptions and require prior approval. All time must be made up before the start of the next academic year.

  • Faculty who did not take time off during the current academic year and have not submitted a vacation request for the summer will not be required to do anything.

  • Faculty who did not return to campus on August 28, 2023 (off-cycle) of the current academic year, will be reviewed separately to determine the best course of action.

Teaching Excellence Award Winners

Hello Faculty,

Each year, the Lethbridge College Faculty Association, and the Lethbridge College Students' Association team up to present awards to some of the best instructors at our institution. I am pleased to announce the recipients of this year's Teaching Excellence Awards, presented by the Lethbridge College Faculty Association (LCFA) and the Lethbridge College Students' Association (LCSA). Please take a moment to get to know this years winners.

Rookie of the Year 2023-24: Casey Bellemare

Casey completed his Masters of Education with a focus in counseling psychology at the University of Lethbridge in 2016. He has been employed by a local non-profit named Family Ties Association since 2015. His roles within the agency have evolved over the years, starting as a Youth Engagement and Family Preservation Worker, progressing to a Clinician, Behavioral Consultant, and eventually becoming Supervisor of group programs. Currently, he oversees the Abilities Services Program, which supports Family Supports for Children with Disability and Aiyiikakimaop for Children with Blood Tribe Social Development.

Family Ties Association has a longstanding and positive relationship with Lethbridge College's Child and Youth Care program. The organization consistently hosts practicum students within its programs and is aware of the high caliber of students enrolled in the program. When asked to teach in the program, he was enthusiastic about being a part of it. He acknowledges that without the guidance of an exceptional mentor at the college and the support of an outstanding Associate Dean, his success would not have been possible.

Teaching Excellence 2023-24: Karla Wolsky

Dr. Karla Wolsky, RN is deeply committed to fostering strong relationships with learners, acknowledging their pivotal role in enriching the learning process. This dedication entails being fully engaged both mentally and physically, establishing an environment where learners feel recognized, heard, and valued.

Dr. Wolsky fosters student success through a multifaceted approach, driven by genuine concern for learners' well-being, continuous professional development, and active involvement in research. Her commitment to student success is not just a professional responsibility but a deeply ingrained belief that guides her every pursuit.

Dr. Wolsky currently serves as an instructor within the Centre for Health and Wellness. Currently, she instructs in the Health Care Aide program (since 2022) and previously taught in the NESA Bachelor of Nursing program (2006-2022). Concurrently, she holds sessional appointments at the University of Calgary, instructing in the Graduate Nursing Certificate Innovations in Teaching & Learning pathway (since 2023); at Algonquin College in the Internationally Educated Nurses (IEN) Pathway (BN, PN) as an online facilitator, subject matter expert, and competency assessor; and at the University of Saskatchewan, teaching in the Graduate Certificate of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) (commencing spring 2024).

Dr. Wolsky has held administrative roles as the Chair of the NESA BN programs (2013-2016) and Chair of the School of Health Sciences and Allied Health programs (2016-2019). She recently completed a graduate certificate in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) from the University of Saskatchewan (2023).

Dr. Wolsky’s research primarily centers on academic integrity in education, with publication within the Canadian Journal of Higher Education. In addition to this, her scholarly pursuits extend to various topics including student engagement, utilization of humor in the classroom, and understanding the educational needs of health care aide students.

Currently, Dr. Wolsky is collaborating on an applied research CARIF project with Rena Walker and a recent graduate in therapeutic recreation. Their project focuses on determining the optimal duration for engaging clients with dementia in preferred therapeutic recreation interventions.

Additionally, Dr. Wolsky is engaged in a SoTL project titled “Cinema Education: Utilizing Films to Teach Psychological Aspects of Client Care for Health Care Aide Students.” She will be presenting her findings at the upcoming ACIFA conference. Dr. Wolsky will also be awarded the ACIFA Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Award during this event.

You are invited to join us in celebrating their accomplishments on Monday, April 15th, 2024, from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm in the Cave. This will be an opportunity to acknowledge and appreciate the outstanding contributions these instructors have made to our institution and its students.

Changes To The Vacation Model

Good afternoon,
 
This e-mail is to advise faculty that Lethbridge College, with support from the Board of Governors, has provided written notice to the Faculty Association to rescind the Letter of Understanding (LOU) negotiated in the last round of bargaining regarding the implementation of a vacation model. Management has determined that the model is not working as intended, and as a result, effective July 1, 2024, will revert to the original provisions in the Collective Agreement affected by this LOU, specifically - Article 14 Academic Year, Article 12 Remuneration for Faculty Members and Article 16 Leaves for Faculty Members. During the first year of its implementation we have encountered many challenges, in both the administration of and application of the model, and believe the challenges outweigh the benefits we had hoped for. We have inadvertently created a complicated system to achieve our initial goal of providing more flexibility to faculty throughout the academic year. The college feels this flexibility can be achieved more easily with some simple procedures utilizing the leave system we already have in place.
 
As some faculty have utilized this new model to take time off during the regular thirty-eight (38) week work period, some transition work will be required between now and June 30, 2024. Human Resources will work closely with the Faculty Association to ensure the amount of assignable work time is in balance for each faculty member for the July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2024 work period. More details regarding process will be provided to you in the coming days and as we begin the transition.

You Are Not Alone Project - Advisory Recruitment

Hello Lethbridge College Faculty Members,

Winter is almost over; or so we hope.  We've been asked to reach out to our Lethbridge College Faculty Member with an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful impact within our community.

ACIFA has partnered with the John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights (JHC) to gain deeper insights into the experiences of discrimination faced by our members in their workplaces and union. To ensure a comprehensive and respectful approach, JHC is forming the "You Are Not Alone" ACIFA Advisory Group, and you are invited to become a part of this initiative.

As a member of the Advisory Group, you will play a pivotal role in guiding the JHC research team. Your expertise will help shape the research tools and frameworks, provide insights into the unique dynamics of your organization, contribute to outreach strategies, and offer valuable feedback on accessibility considerations.

Here are some key details about the Advisory Group:

  • Commitment: Four virtual meetings of approximately 2 hours each, scheduled between March and September 2024.

  • Recognition: An honorarium will be provided for each attended meeting, acknowledging the value of your time, expertise, and participation.

  • Confidentiality: Your responses to the application will be kept strictly confidential, accessible only to the JHC research team.

 As we welcome you back to campus, let's embrace the opportunities that lie ahead. Let's foster a spirit of collaboration, innovation, and excellence. Let's work together to ensure that our institution remains a beacon of knowledge, discovery, and progress.

 This year we will convene our Negotiations Committee and begin the process of bargaining a new Collective Agreement.  These discussions will be pivotal in shaping our institution's future and ensuring that our faculty's contributions and needs are acknowledged and valued. With the recent changes to the Collective Agreement and removal of assigned/unassigned day; the Academic Calendar has been updated accordingly.  

Please ensure that if you've made any arrangements to return to campus on a different date than August 28th, 2023, that it's recorded and approved by your Dean.  You don't need to put in a leave request to take your summer holidays.

LCFA - Faculty Short Survey

Good day,

At long last the end of the school year is almost here.  Hopefully you'll be able to take some time to recharge, relax, and comeback refreshed in the fall.  Before you go... the LCFA would like you to take a short survey (5 questions) and provide us with your thoughts on a few topics.

The purpose of this survey is to collect feedback from faculty; which we hope, will help continue to shine a spotlight on some of the priorities we've been trying to address with administration throughout the year.  All information gathered from this survey comes directly to the LCFA, and individual feedback is not shared with administration.  It is completely confidential and administration has no input, control, or access to the data collected.  This is conducted by the LCFA for LCFA members.

Please take a few moments to share your thoughts with us so we can work together and continue building a better Lethbridge College culture and environment for everyone.

Reminder:  Lethbridge College Faculty Association AGM & General Election - 2023 

When:  May 15th, 4:15 pm
Where:  EC Fredrick Theatre

Hello folks, 

Just a reminder that the Lethbridge College Faculty Association will be holding their Annual General Meeting in the EC Fredricks Theatre on May 15th, 2023 @ 4:15 pm.  We hope you will join us; either in person, or online.  

During this meeting faculty will have the opportunity to vote on a motion to change the compensation provided to members of the Negotiations Committee.  Please click this link to review the proposed changes. 

The VP Administration position for the LCFA has recently become available for individuals wishing to fill this position.  A huge thank you to Bill Smienk for his contributions to the LCFA and fulfilling this position.  

Members will also have the opportunity to be nominated for other open committee positions within the FA.  You will find a call for nominations and open position below.

      • Three (3) full-time and/or part-time continuing academic staff not including trades or non-continuing staff.

Acceptance of nominations but be made in writing by the individual nominated.  Mike will follow up with individuals who have been nominated but acceptance has not been made in writing.  

An announcement of the elected representatives and committee members will be circulated the following business day after voting has closed.

A quick note - Please check your JUNK folder for ballots once notification of an open election.  There have  been instances where the ballot is filtered out by mistake.  If you do not get a ballot and wish to vote, please contact Mike Mayo and he will arrange for a ballot to be made available.

The Lethbridge College Faculty Association would like to encourage all Faculty members to complete the Guarding Minds at Work Survey.  This is an opportunity for Faculty to share their thoughts and comments on the psychological health and safety of our campus.  It's important for Faculty to lend their voice and help shape the culture of our institution.  

Responses will remain anonymous and combined with responses of others in your department or centre.  If you have any questions regarding your privacy; how the results will be reported, or are unclear which department you fall under, please contact OHS or IPAR.

The survey will be using several different terms in reference to psychological health and safety. Please review the definitions below and keep them in mind when completing your survey:

  • Harassment: includes any unwelcome verbal or physical behavior that unreasonably interferes with work/learning or creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive work/learning environment. General harassment can include, but is not limited to, remarks, jokes or actions which demean or humiliate another person, and which deny individuals their dignity and respect. General harassment can also include bullying. Bullying usually involves repeated incidents or a pattern of behavior that is intended to intimidate, offend, degrade or humiliate a particular person or group of people. (LC Respectful campus policy)

  • Discrimination: includes any unwelcome behavior or communication directed towards a person or members of an identifiable group based on a prohibited ground of discrimination. Prohibited grounds include the following: race, religious beliefs, color, gender, physical disability, mental disability, marital status, age, ancestry, place of origin, family status, source of income and sexual orientation. (As defined by the Alberta Human Rights Commission) Excluding a person from a right or privilege to which they would otherwise be entitled, because of a prohibited ground, would constitute prohibited conduct. (LC Respectful campus policy)

  • Bullying: Bullying is usually seen as acts or verbal comments that could psychologically or 'mentally' hurt or isolate a person in the workplace. Sometimes, bullying can involve negative physical contact as well. Bullying usually involves repeated incidents or a pattern of behaviour that is intended to intimidate, offend, degrade or humiliate a particular person or group of people. It has also been described as the assertion of power through aggression. (CCOHS definition)

  • Union: Means a member of Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) or the Lethbridge College Faculty Association (LCFC).

  • Remotely: Means working virtually or not on college campus, whether regularly scheduled or a one-off occurrence.

LCFA Executive Council is excited to begin a new initiative by hosting LCFA Town Hall Drop In events in the coming weeks.  These Town Halls will focus on topics ranging from the Workload Calculator to Intellectual Property and will take place in the various constituencies throughout the College.

You'll receive an invitation to your Constituency LCFA Town Hall shortly, if you are unable to attend your scheduled LCFA Town Hall, please feel free to drop in any of the other scheduled events.
